Recommended wine tours in Montevideo and Canelones

The Wine ExperienceThe Wine Experience is more like catching up with friends and focuses on wine tours to small wineries, where you will be able to meet the owners and winemakers in person for a more real, personal and cultural experience.

These tours will give you a real feel for Uruguay, where you will be guided by Ryan, a South African and your own inside man and wine expert, who has been living in Uruguay for six years and who knows all the best places.

Besides tasting great wines and various expressions of the famous Tannat grape (now considered the healthiest wine in the world) you will get to meet real people behind the scenes, who will share their passion and love for winemaking.

A bunch of my guests at Casa Sarandi Guesthouse had taken tours with Ryan for several years before I ever met him. I was consistently surprised by their stories of his creative approach to the tours – I could see he was matching vineyards and activities closely to the preferences of the visitors – with more rustic experiences for some, luxury vineyards for others.

Oh, and having heard tales that he was more often than not managing the asado (the typical Uruguayan barbeque) at some of the vineyards himself, indicated to me that the local winemakers see Ryan as their one of their own, otherwise they’re not going to hand over their tongs that easily!

The Montevideo-Canelones wine tours

The Tannat Experience

This experience will be 100% with the owner for a more personal and real experience. This tour up to 4 hours is a very complete experience with lots of wine plus more if you like! The tour starts at 10:00am. Ryan will be your expert guide and private sommelier.

The Gourmet Experience

You will visit a small family winery in the heart of Canelones wine region, where you will have a visit and tasting with the owner followed by a special lunch prepared by Federico (chef & owner). Ryan will choose wine from his private collection to be paired with the meal. You will taste the best white wine in Uruguay including a 2002 Vintage Pinot Noir.

“I took the President of the Tasters Guild of America, who was overwhelmed with the experience. He wanted to replicate the main dish at home and said that the dessert was the best they’ve ever had,” says Ryan.

The tour starts at 09:30am and is up to 5:00 hours with Ryan as your guide and private sommelier.

Special Price: USD199 p/p
